Who we are

Our website address is: https://greigobrien.com. This is the site for author Greig O’Brien, for posting of short fiction and information about the author.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

I’m not a fan of comments sections on websites and have no intention of hosting a comments section on any of the pages of this website. If that changes at any point, I will abide by the following criteria:

When visitors leave comments on the site we would collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. An anonymized string would be created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture would be visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

I also have no plans to have a user-generated section for this website. If that changes, however, I would suggest that if you upload images to the site that you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website. In fact, it’s a good rule of thumb to not upload images online, anywhere, that have personal information embedded in the meta data. Protect yourself, friends.

Cookies

The most data this site will collect will be in the course of collecting cookies for any advertisements hosted on the site. By visiting my website and reading my content, you agree to being exposed to ads and their advertising tracking cookies.

Again, I have no plans to have a comments section on any pages, but if that changes in the future: If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

Who we share your data with and how long we retain your data

I have no plans to collect any users’ personal data, and if I did I wouldn’t share it with anyone.

Again, I have no intention of having any comments sections on this website, but if that changes in the future: If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata will be retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

The only other data we collect is from Google Analytics, which should not collect anything beyond base-level behavioral search habits. (Check Google’s privacy policy for more information.)

What rights you have over your data

I plan to have no registration function on this site and no comments sections, but if that changes in the future: If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you will be able to request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

The only ones collecting information about you on this site would be from advertising tracking cookies, and possibly from media embedded from another website.

Your contact information

You can contact me at gmobrien@gmail.com if you have questions or concerns about anything in this policy.

How we protect your data

We protect your data most directly by not collecting it. Again, the only data we collect is from advertising cookies and Google Analytics. (And we don’t even collect that data directly ourselves.) Nothing of any truly personal nature should be getting gleaned from anyone visiting this site. If at any point that proves incorrect, we will act immediately to remedy the situation. If at any point this changes, we will announce it and update this policy.

What data breach procedures we have in place

Not collecting personal information in the first place means that we don’t need elaborate breach procedures to protect that nonexistent data. There is nothing on this website to breach. It’s a repository for my short fiction and nothing more. (Again, if at any point that proves incorrect, I will remedy the situation immediately.)

What third parties we receive data from

We use Google Analytics to collect traffic data. And we host advertisements that collect information from traffic cookies. Other than that, we also use Yoast SEO to optimize our search engine results.

What automated decision making and/or profiling we do with user data

We don’t collect user date and we do wouldn’t do anything with it if we did.
